About “Viasna”

Human Rights Centre “Viasna” (Belarus)In the spring of 1996 was created a public watchdog “Spring 96” after the first mass demonstration in Minsk on acceleration, which occurred April 26th during the “Chernobyl Way”. Then it was delayed for more than 200 people.
Its main objective was to support joint and several of the first political prisoners, legal aid to victims of political repression, gathering and disseminating human rights information, legal education.
In 1998, the Human Rights Centre “Viasna” was registered as the Minsk city organization, and in 1999 – as a republican human rights public association.
However, in October 2003, the center has been eliminated by the Supreme Court. The reason for elimination was the participation of members in monitoring the 2001 presidential election.
Since that time there were 3 attempts to re-register the center, but they all failed, even despite the fact that on 24 June 2007, the UN Human Rights Commission found that by eliminating “Viasna”, Belarusian authorities violated Paragraph 1 of Article 22 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
In 2004 the Centre “Viasna” was adopted by the International Federation of Human Rights.
The Belarusian authorities have repeatedly shown obstruction of human rights activities “Viasna”. This was expressed not only in the unlawful refusal of registration of the organization. So, after the events of December 19th, 2010 at the Center were searched, the apartment, where the Centre has repeatedly blocked by law enforcement bodies of Belarus, defenders of “Viasna” detained by law enforcement officials in the regions of the country, fell in the lists of “special controls” at the border crossing, etc.
Not looking at it now the Human Rights Centre “Viasna” is one of the leading human rights organizations in Belarus.
In 2011 – “Viasna” was 15 years old.
More information about the activities of the Human Rights Centre “Vesna” can be found on their website.
